Engineered Flooring

What is an oiled finish?

Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the colour and grain as well as providing protection for the floor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled floors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage.

Most oiled floors require an additional coat of oil or Hardwax Oil, a mixture of sunflower, soybean and thistle oil, carnauba and candelilla wax after installation. This is micro-porous, water-repellent, dirt-, wear-, and stain-resistant against wine, beer, cola, coffee, tea, fruit juices and milk; it will not crack, flake, peel or blister.

What is a lacquered finish?

Lacquer is normally a polyurethane coating which is applied to the surface of a wooden floor by brush or roller. The polyurethane covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient coating which protects the wood from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden floor for anything from 12 months to 6 years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic.

How do I care for a lacquered wood floor?

Lacquered wood floors are very easy to care for. For everyday cleaning a broom, vacuum cleaner or micro-fibre mop may be used to remove dust and loose debris. For wet cleaning the floor should be misted from a pump spray bottle to avoid it becoming too wet and dried using a micro-fibre wet head. Do not use conditioner, cleanser or steam mop on a lacquered wooden floor.

How do I care for an oiled wood floor?

Oiled wood floors are very easy to care for. For everyday cleaning to remove dust or loose debris a broom, vacuum cleaner or dry mop is all that is required. For more thorough cleaning, damp mop using a diluted oiled wood floor cleaner. In public places where the footfall is greater, oiled wood floors may be damp mopped on a daily basis and should be treated regularly with a maintenance wax. This may be applied to the most heavily used areas or to the whole floor, spreading it with an electric, single-disc buffing machine with a beige pad. Maintenance wax need only be applied to residential flooring when the wood begins to look a little lifeless.

Will my Engineered Timber floor change colour over time?

Yes. All timber floors change over time. The coating system, when exposed to natural light, will alter somewhat after installation. Generally, darker colours will darken and lighter colours will lighten further. This is generally not noticeable as the change is so gradual.

How large an area can I cover without requiring an expansion profile in the room?

Start in the upper left corner of the longest wall and install the planks in the same direction as that in which the main light falls. Planks are always installed from left to right.

Who do I turn to if I have a complaint?

If you have any complaints about the floor please consult the store or installer from whom you purchased it.

What are vapour barriers or moisture barriers?

Vapour barriers or moisture barriers are films made from synthetic materials (usually polyethylene, also called PE films) that should limit the penetration of moisture from the subsurface into the laminate floor. They need only be installed on mineral subfloors such as stone, concrete, asphalt, because under certain climatic conditions water vapour can precipitate as condensation and cause structural damage. The vapour barrier is laid trough-like or “floating”. The rows are laid next to each other with approx. 20cm overlap and affixed with masking tape (see installation guide).

What is recommended for uneven subfloor surfaces?

Subfloor surfaces with differences in the surface of more than three millimetres per running metre must be sanded down or spackled (according to DIN 18202). Unevenness in the subfloor is best determined with a straightedge or a long spirit level.

How does one dispose of laminate flooring? Can laminate be recycled or burnt?

Disposing of laminate is no problem at all. Leftover installation materials and other parts or old flooring can be disposed of in your normal household waste collection. Complete floors, which you wish to dispose of, on the other hand, should be taken directly to a local landfill site. Since laminate flooring consists of 80 per cent wood, they can be safely burnt or incinerated just like other wood products. Thanks to new technological processes, laminate flooring is even recyclable. Up to 85 per cent of the mass of laminate flooring can be put back into the manufacturing process in the form of wood chips or fibres.

What do I have to do before installation?

You must acclimate your laminate boards for 48 hours in the room where they will be installed, before you install them. That means open the boxes and let the laminate boards adjust to their surroundings. Installation should take place at room temperature of at least 65°F (15°C). A floor surface temperature of 59°F and an overall room temperature of 64°F must be ensured before, during and three days after the installation.

Do I have to keep staggering the planks in my laminate flooring installation?

The first row should be started with a full plank, the second row with a 2/3 plank and the third row with a 1/3 plank.

The distance between joints from one row to the next for the remainder of the installation must be 8″ or greater.

Will there be any cutting waste?

In an average installation, approximately 7% to 10% of the total area to be covered will be wasted for several reasons, typically cuts, planks damaged during installation, or errors.
